BETUZ Secures 15% Salary Increment for Teachers

Following intensive negotiations with the Ministry of General Education, the Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia is pleased to announce a 15% salary increment for all basic education teachers across the country. The adjustment will take effect from April 2026 and will be reflected in the May 2026 payslip.

This achievement is the result of sustained advocacy by BETUZ leadership and the collective voice of over 45,000 members. The union remains committed to fighting for improved working conditions and fair remuneration for all educators.

Provincial offices will be conducting briefings to provide further details. Members with questions are encouraged to contact their branch representatives.

Annual General Conference — Livingstone 2026

The 2026 Annual General Conference will be held in Livingstone from March 15 to 18. This year's theme is Strengthening Unity for Quality Education.

All provincial delegates are expected to attend. Observers from branches are welcome for plenary sessions. Accommodation and transport arrangements are being coordinated through provincial offices.

Key agenda items include: Report from the General Secretary, Financial report and budget, Constitutional amendments, Election of national executive committee members, Resolutions from provinces.

Delegate nominations must be submitted by February 28, 2026.

New Teacher Training Partnership with UNZA

BETUZ has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Zambia to deliver a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for basic education teachers. The programme will offer subsidised certificates in modern pedagogy, inclusive education, and assessment methods.

Registration opens on March 1, 2026. The programme is limited to 200 BETUZ members in the first cohort. Priority will be given to members who have not previously accessed union training.

Courses will be delivered through a blended model (online and in-person workshops). Successful participants will receive CPD points recognised by the Teaching Council of Zambia.

Medical Aid Claims Processing Update

BETUZ members can now submit medical aid claims through the membership portal for faster processing. The new system reduces turnaround time from 14 days to 7 working days.

To submit a claim: 1) Log in to the membership portal. 2) Go to Welfare and Benefits. 3) Download and complete the claim form. 4) Upload supporting documents (receipts, medical reports). 5) Submit online.

Claims will be processed and payments made directly to your nominated bank account. For queries, contact your provincial office or email claims@betuz.org.zm.

Branch Meeting Schedules — Q1 2026

Branch meeting schedules for the first quarter of 2026 have been published. All members are encouraged to attend their local branch meetings to stay informed and participate in union activities.

Meetings will cover: Updates on national negotiations, Local branch affairs, Member concerns and grievances, Training and development opportunities.
